Winter

Winter

Winter in Shimla, brings back fond memories. One cold wintry morning it suddenly dawned on me that all that we had been studying in physics was true. Water in the pipelines had frozen, the pipes had burst and I was in no mood to take a bath anyway. Snow had made the trees heavier (physics) and they fell on electricity power cables. Shorting them (physics). No electricity. Body shivering involuntarily (Biology). Mom telling me to fetch snow from the top of a hill, so she could put it into a utensil and make water to drink, by heating on the stove. I protested - we had child labour laws, u know. But again, fond memories...

I MISS THE WARMTH

Conversation 1:

“It’s so friggin’ cold here. I just want to remain in bed.”

“Aah…I love that!”

“No Nabila…I was in Goa some days back. It was sunny. I was in the water and was just so happy under the sun. It was warm!”

“So, you too think winters are depressing?”

“Of course they are!”

Conversation two:

“How is the weather there, Nabila?”

“It’s nice and cold. I love it.”

“I wonder why people find winters depressing.”

“I wonder too. It is such a lovely season. Isn’t it?”

“Yeah! Sitting in a cozy club, sipping beer, watching it snow outside, sounds perfect, doesn’t it?”

“Umm…yeah… I just wish it was always winters.”

“Always?”

“Yah…It’s the only time in the year when I see my father.”

Winter's (song)

I stood on my porch

Sipping on my tea

And I stared out in to the land

The river flowed older

And the wind blew colder

and louder got Dave Mathew's band

Frost-bitten green

Lay all around me

As she came running on home

She stood afar and shivered

While inside I shuddered

Why cant she throw me a bone

Then I sang to myself…

Of an old country tale

Of winter's breeze and rain

I saw through the cloud

And I had no doubt

It was blowing to ease my pain

I saddled up my beauty

Picked out my bags

headed for a ride to the lake

I rolled up a smoke

And thought an old joke

As I danced through winter's charade

Winter Blues...

It is deep January.

Perhaps I am a bear, or some hibernating animal underneath. The instinct to be half asleep all winter is so strong in me.

The sun has turned his face away. Water stands as stone and numbness. My Earth is a vale of grief. The instinct to be half dead all winter is so strong in me.

Frost to me is bleak and I see strangeness in my eyes.

My flowers are dead. My fishes succumb.

These are the cruelest months…of wailing winds and naked woods and meadows brown and sere.

Yet, somewhere in the depth of winter, I learn an invincible summer within me. The instinct to live completely all winter is so strong in me.

(not up for the kompetiton as Dr. Sweta’s out.of.station!)

And i saw

...in my first winter,
a chilling freeze
as a mist
when i breathe.

...my cold,red nose
sniffed delicacies to eat
my warming quilt
my dog on my feet.

...in the winters to follow
i foresaw
what others could too
but for sheer awe.

wiser now
wiser how!

...in all my winters
seen as one
i saw few precious
faces of perfection.

wiser now
wiser how!

let me share
magical fare!
to delight thou
make you stare...

sunlight in winter
honey on ginger
rum in a cold
wisdom of the old

innocenct mischief
reality surreal
velvets royal feel
his hands warming mine

YOU

Walking in the lanes of life,

Less with pain yet more with strife,

I passed by YOU that winter day,

And felt my troubles melt away…

Turning back, I walk to YOU,

He looked at me and saw me through,

My soul stirred and my “self” smiled,

Feelings did dawn, tender and mild…

As I sat by the bay,

Thoughts of YOU made my mind sway,

It was long since I felt this way,

Despair increased, as I wanted to convey,

That I need YOU now more than ever,

Hold my hand and be mine forever,

Let my love never die,

Lead me to my “ocean” of joy …

Rush.me (120)

5:58 am...
The hand laid across the warm skin, sought to feel the tenderness lost millions of hours ago... The eye tried to locate the morning sun amidst the darkness...
He fancied a hot shower... she thought of the last shower together...

5:59 am
The hand gently moved, yearning for that forgotten proximity... The eye looked around, searching for something, someone???
His reverie of thoughts focused on the once-love-of-his-life... She fought to reclaim the once lost love.

6:00 am
The Hand gently touched the Other, embracing it...The eye spilled a sorry tear, may be the last one...
He moved closer, skin to skin, assuming winter had arrived... She smirked in all innocence, thanking. Winter had arrived...
Buzz...
Buzz...

Shivers running down the spine

Hundred excuses not to leave the warmth of the 'razai'

Strolling in the chilly dawn wind

The crunch of fresh snow under the feet

The beauty of a snowy winter day

Catching the first flakes on the tongue

Snowmen with button eyes and carrot nose

Snow angels and sledge slides

Kids full of glee: merry time

A dash of colour in a sea of white

The beauty of a snowy winter day

The smell of burning wood in the fireplace

Sitting down with a book and dreaming away

Craving for 'gajar ka halwa'

'ek cup chai'

The beauty of a snowy winter day

Sneaking in with freezing hands

Cold touch on a warm face

That warm gaze

His hand in mine

A hug and a smile

The beauty of a snowy winter day

Nandini Sen (122)

Autumn rolled back his rust-gold cloak and Winter descended in her pristine white gown.
Crossing the mountains, she blew kisses, it turned foggy.
Descending further, she twirled her gown, flakes of snow floated about.
She smiled, snow started to form ice.
Winter sighed, the valley shivered.

Sleighs, snowmen, bonfires dotted the landscape. Bears hibernated, birds flew south. It was a kaleidoscope of blankets, mufflers, sweaters, heaters. Rosy cheeks, red noses, huddled people .Hot chocolate, soups, dryfuits.

Winter happily surveyed her handiwork, and saw Spring was already laying out her veil of new green.

When Winter reached back, the other Seasons gave her the customary high fives & hugs, and Winter knew she’d done her job well for another year.

Truth Dude (116)

Dreaming of Immortals

High in the mountains Thor awaited his friend.
The Mjolnir crackled with electricity. Here on the holiest of grounds, it was bursting with power.

Thor, the mighty Lord of thunder and lightning stood patiently. Under the starlit sky with icy peaks gleaming all around him, he waited. He heard the bull before he saw his friend. And so came Rudra.

Thor greeted his friend with a handshake that could crush a mountain. And Rudra just smiled.
At the zenith of winter, when the Gods retreated to their comfortable mansions, these two friends, rekindled the warmth of friendship.

And I woke up to freezing winds, lightning in the skies and Mt. Kailas standing tall on the horizon!

Mickey the Monkey (118)

It was a chilly winter morning.
I was on my daily jog.
Suddenly it started to pour.
I ran under a porch for shelter.
I was drenched, my body shivering with cold.
I saw, near the wall, some burning coal.
I started to blow them to ignite fire and get some heat.
"Those are not ember, monkey, those are ripe red fruits."
I saw Virmani mocking at me, Purple Krown perched precariously over his head.
"With hands and feet, you look like a man.
You're even tailless!
Don't you have a brain too?"
This was enough to infuriate me.
I snatched his Krown and shattered it into pieces.
"Teasing a monkey! this will teach you a lesson, Surdie"

Richa Gupta (117)

It was my first winter

in this foreign land.

I felt like an uprooted tree

into the snow from the sand. (am from Rajasthan)

The night fell early,

the trees were all bare.

It looked as if the end was coming,

no more did God care

Then came the first snow,

Softly…silently…very white.

It settled on the road, on the grass,

nestling in the arms of the trees it sighed.

The world looked totally different,

a quiet magic filled the air.

It looked peaceful and serene

a white blanket everywhere.

I felt strange, almost exhilarated;

All the bare branches and getting dark at three

was just God prepping the world

before He got into his winter spree

The Red Ronin (115)

The sky is stark and grey as pale sunshine se

eks a mirror in the ashen snow draping the barren earth. The bare trees stand up rigid and brittle in the face of bitter cold while the wild wind howls eloquent. The sea batters the shores with waters colder than sharp steel knives. In this bleak horizon a tiny flower dares to bloom in the cold winter snow. The world all around it is frigid and cold, but yet it flowers on with all its might, this fertile whore.

All around her the snow falls, without hesitation. Why does it snow? She grows cold without an answer...

But does the snow know it chills her heart?

Konfessioner Singh (120)

Warming my hands in her lap she

looked further than far
and I followed her eye to wherever that was…
Over peace-stead,
into the sighing silver oak trees,
beyond covered-passage
into green woods that were deep…

I waited and thought.
(just like little girls seldom do than oft’)
Then ventured to ask,
in a certain voice,
and with a brave heart,
What is it mama?

My little heart now wishing
she thought what I thought.

No nothing poppet…
It’s just old winter coming along.
Oh…

said a small voice disappointed and all…

But!
She heard, and she smiled.
Then tucking two curls,
behind my affronted pink ears--
Hmmm…Did somebody’s tummy say
Apple-Pie?
Haaa! How did YOU know!
Ha ha…just winter!

I loved winters as a child, but now I hate it.
Then I used to sit in the lawn, in sun, with a novel, cup of hot coffee and lots of chikky and revadis. Most of my winters spend thus.
Now I am sitting in this cold chamber of my clinic , waiting for the occasional patient to come, Winter being the so called healthy season
Its so wonderful to see so many takes, and few new faces too.

Welcome to Arnav, Blah Q & Red S....and hi to every one else.
Super Klashes.
OK here goes my Komments...and Voting -

NonsSens said...

Ohhh BTW, NonsSens is me Nandini......dunno what happened, I mean I created this blog with Nons...as the name, and I see that suddenly its this name which is being displayed (instead of Nandini)....but then I guess, whats in a name.....
here goes my Komments -

Arnav - Nice childhood memories. Shimla must've been fun to grow up in...and winter brought in more work. Nicely put....liked it quite a bit.

Blah Queen - Wow....nice contrast...I too wish "its always winters". I love the season...and yes, I've never lived in areas where it gets colder than 0 degrees - so in that sense maybe Delhi winters are "milder"...but I love it.

Mandappa - Great, great - winter captured really well."River flowed older & wind blew colder"....nice.She shivered and you shuddered inside...but still winter isn't depressing for you. Good.

Kavish - Awwww....the "dark side of winter"...and I assume it doesn't even snow in your part of the world, yet you hate it :(...I liked your writing since you potrayed the theme well....but naaah I can't accept winter as depressing. Heyyy the cold cold nip in the air, which cuts through you is the one which gives me the kick, the high...its great to go for a walk in the cold winter breeze.

CoffeeIMP - Not up for competition?? Thats a shame....this is so well written...with winter all over it. "Cold red nose...honey on giner...sunlight in winter"....ummm ohhh that wintry feeling. Captured well.

Gen F - More of feelings...less of winter. Heyyyy yearning & seperation - dont blame it all on winter :-))

Rushe.M - Wow cuddling in bed on a winter morning is such a great, warm feeling....One of things I love about winters........and the pain comes when you've actually got to get out of bed.

Shweta - Perfect WInter poem....captured it all.Crunch of fresh snow, snowmen with button eyes, gajar ki halwa & chai, cold touch on warm face. .....I think I would've voted for you....but for word limit :((....its a lovely piece. WInter at its best.

The Konfessioners said...

A warm warm WARM welkome to Nabila Zaidi aka Blah Queen and The Red Ronin orin aka Ritesh Reddy! I'm sorry I missed Rit's entry because it was in spam! and it was in spam for 20 hours before he told me he'd sent somethin' in :)

Apologies Rit and apologies to those who have voted and kommented!

Truth D - Great imagination...the God's play and we shiver.....Really loved your creativity.

Mickey the M - Hahah - you're surely the PG Wodehouse of Klash. Consistently funny. Off Dok Saab's back...and hammering on GSV's head :-))
You seem to be having a string of bad luck...first the tail, then getting caught in the cold winter rain, and being mocked by GSV...ohhhh poor you. Probably you should go jogging when its a little warmer :-))

Richa - Ahhhh trepidition to awe & exhilaration with the first snow. Wow. JUst loved the potrayal....Voting is getting difficult...half votes not allowed.....I'll have to toss up.

Dok Saab - If I called SHweta's poem "perfect winter poem"...I'll call yours the sa,e too (somehow I've become word challenged :(( )
Right from the first few lines "Central heating, Cozy fur blanket"...till the very end "Stiff icy hands, Unable to wrk"....its good old winter all the way.
Its getting difficult - whom should I vote for Richa, you??? Who???

Red Sorin - Nice piece....Biut does the snow know it chills her heart...awesome line.
For you its the "hard, stark, bare" winter.

Konf Singh - Nice, sweet...ummmm can almost smell the Apple Pie. Slurrrp!!!! Ohhh winter delicacies are soooo awesome.

My vote - Dok Saab / Richa / Mandappa? Richa/Madappa / Dok Saab?? Who????

Umm ......I actually did a lucky draw - Dok Saab you win....the chit with your name came up.
(Wish we could split our votes....Richa & Mandappa I'm sorry)

My Vote - Dok Saab.

Hello!

Thank you for all that 'warm' welkome!! This is my first Klash and oh-am-I-loving-it here!! It is so nice to be here among so many other interesting and creative people sharing their works. Feels good and am completely 'eKstatiK' ;-).

Now, time for my Komments (seems like I'll have to master the K writing style now ;-) )

@ Arnav.... Interesting Klash... Helped me re call all that physics and bio that I ever studied dis interestingly. ;)

@ Mandappa.... Very picturesque. You know...like the The river flowed older

And the wind blew colder
and I rolled up a smoke

And thought an old joke
.A wonderfully chilly and equally warm picture was formed in my mind as I read it.

@ Kavish.... Yet, somewhere in the depth of winter, I learn an invincible summer within me. The instinct to live completely all winter is so strong in me. Love this line. Thats how it should be. Winters can't be all that depressing! ;)

@ Coffeeismyspoon.... I completely loved this piece. This is 'so' 'so' 'so' winters!! One of my favorites Klashes (unofficial though)!

@ Genuine Fake.... Winter has so much to do with As I sat by the bay,

Thoughts of YOU made my mind sway,
Probably the most romantic of all seasons. :-)

@ Rush.me.... AArrrggghhh...who wants to leave bed early in the morning anyway, and then come ye winters!! Alarms ringing on a perfect warm cozy moment in bed, under the 'razai', can be frustrating!

@ Shweta.... Wow!! Indeed, The beauty of a snowy winter day. Wonderful piece Shweta! I have too many favorite lines from your piece to paste. ;)

@ Nandini... Beautiful Klash Nandini. Gives a picture of you looking at the cold season taking over most of the planet, from above and giving a full description of it. Autumn rolled back his rust-gold cloak and Winter descended in her pristine white gown. How royal! :-)

@ Truth dude.... And I woke up to freezing winds, lightning in the skies and Mt. Kailas standing tall on the horizon! Aah! Reminds me of my trip to Mukhteshwar, when I was dreaming of having taken up sanyas and living in the mountains. And I woke up to a snowy capped Himalaya ;-)

@ Mickey the monkey.... LOL..!! Superb Mickey the monkey. But did Virmani really deserve what you did to him that cold day? ;-)

@ Richa.... Winters do have their own divine touch, don't they? ...a quiet magic filled the air.....a white blanket everywhere. Beautiful Klash!

@ Dok Saab... Ahan! Now thats WINTER for you in 94 words!! Simple, straight and complete! :-)

@ Red Ronin.... The sea batters the shores with waters colder than sharp steel knives. and She grows cold without an answer... An interesting and thoughtful post! :-)

@ Konfessioner Singh... Hmmm…Did somebody’s tummy say
Apple-Pie?
Haaa! How did YOU know!
Does anybody hear the grumbling of my stomach that screams for an apple pie!!??? Cute post Konfessioner. Expresses the warmth that comes with winters. :-)

Now, time for my vote...hhhmm... Alright, its my first time and yes, I am nervous. It is now that I realize the importance of the Koveted Purple Krown and so the vote has to be given after I have done some serious thinking.....hhhhmmmm....*thinking*.....I would have loved to give my vote to coffeeismyspoon, but since it is not a part of it, my vote goes to Shweta Srivastava.

Cheers! :-)

richa said...

So here are my Komments...must clarify at the onset that the temp here is..has been -3 to -18 with 5 storms already in this season. we have lived without electricity and about 100 people have died...yes this is the US of A!! but I love it..couldnt agree with Non more..a walk in the winter breeze..nothing to make you feel as alive or as numb if you are out too long LOL

Arnav: warm welcome...maybe it will keep you warm LOL!! I have always wished I was born in the hills alas was in Rajasthan!! your write up is simple and evocative and yes nostalgic!!

Blah Queen: welcome..took me a while to understand but when i did it was touching. how perceptions change nad how we associate seasons with memories

Sir Mandy: can we pls hear the song...do a podcast na!! i always wonder what you do...u make me envious!1 :( why the bone..a discordant line in the otherwise beautiful song. what happened to the word limit?? eh?

Kaveesh: loved the lines "Perhaps I am a bear, or some hibernating animal underneath. The instinct to be half asleep all winter is so strong in me" you have a flair for writing funny!! seasons are what oyu make them to be. u r lucky its not sub zero temp!! why is earth a vale of grief?? its not so bad is it??

Coffeeis..: these lines "sunlight in winter
honey on ginger" were mesmerising...i interpreted them to read the color of sunlight at about 3-4 in the height of winter..when it looks like molten honey!! ooohhh love that color!! the last line..love is all divine..was a little cliched and corny
i wish u were open to comp...my vote to you

GF: didnt feel winter in your write up, but good rhyme and story

Rush.Me: men are from Mars and women...you have captured this soooo well!! why the tear? and why the last one?

Shweta: other than the word limit..you have captured winter!! hum to yahan gajar ka halwa aur sadak ki chai peene ke liye taras gaye!!

Nons: wonderful...to personify winter..nice take. my vote to you...

TD: nice touch..having Thor and Rudra come together..joining two cultures..but the feel of winter wasnt there.

Mickey: koi puja shuja karva lo bhai..tumhare grah acche nahi hain :) GSV ne padh liya to vakai marne daudega!!!

Richa: well its a take straight out of my life..hated my first winter here. it gets dark around 3-3:30 and it was soooo depressing. the bare trees really reminded me of those sci-fi movies where the end has come and everything is sooo barren but now I love it. Winter has its own beauty and love the fact that i can live thru all the 4 seasons in their entirity..never want to live in California or Florida!!

Doc Sa'ab: aap to chha gaye...what a contrast and the flow was so smooth. i see a champion of the "have nots" in you...am so proud of you!! my vote is now getting split...u or Nons??!!hmmmm

Red Ronin: it read nice till i reached "this fertile whore"..seemed a bit "jabardasti ghuseda hua" the last line was nice

Princess: we seem to be reminiscing these days eh?? to comment on you would be suraj ko diya dikhana..i feel you have become much better at least for me in the terms of writing simple..jo sabki samajh mein aa jaye!! these lines were awesome "Then tucking two curls,
behind my affronted pink ears--
Hmmm…Did somebody’s tummy say
Apple-Pie?" so simple yet so eloquent!!!

am still thinking on my vote....

Very beautiful personification of seasons, Nandini.
the other Seasons gave her the customary high fives & hugs
very different take, when most of us either hate or love winter, you have taken a new perspective. (they celebrate a National High Five Day in US sometimes in April )
Red Ronin(115)
You have painted a very frigid picture of mom earth, Ronin.
And for the only bright spot, the blooming flower, you have called it a whore, why?
Welkome to the klash , Ronin, you will be interesting human to watch for.
Richa Gupta (117)
You are from Rajsthan? I thought you were an UPiet.
First winter in US of A, must be lovely feeling for a person who has never seen snow on roofs and trees. Lovely, but still you are at your best when you write kavita in hindi, Richa Jee.
Rush.me (120)
5:58 am on a winter morning, and thinking of shower, Brrrrr, even the thought of bath send shivers down my spine.
Shweta Srivastav (138)
Perfect description of the winter as I want to spend, especially the gajar ka halwa in the warmth of a rajai. Wish you had said this in 120 words.
Truth Dude (116)
You are again at it, telling stories which need a lots of explanations for a simian peanut sized brain as mine. Only words that looked familiar to me in your take are Mt Kailash and Rudra.

My Vote
goes to
NonSens Nondini for the very beautiful portrayal of winter
Though Kaveesh’s winter was nearest to my heart.

Whoops Sorry Empress!! I'm adding it to the komments!!!

it is more than 120 words but this is a true incident...my fist introduction to snow and i wanted to share it with all at Klash who I have come to know as friends....

I had walked a mile (1.6km), for grocery, that winter morning. We were poor then, as all students are here in the US, FOB!! I was walking back with my friend, another poor student dependent (as per our passports!!) wife like me. Laden with grocery bags and backpacks stuffed with more food (coke was on sale that day!!) we were trudging along, happily complaining about lack of servants and this and that. Suddenly I saw a couple of ash (Raakh) flakes go by and I said to my friend " I thought burning wood/ kachra on the road was not allowed here…but look someone is making a bonfire" She looked around and commented that it wasn't so cold either. It was then one of the "ash" flakes settled on my nose and I felt it…COLD!! We both stopped right there and it hit us….it was snowing!!!! This was our first snowfall ever...no romantic fireplace, or wine or even waking up to a picture postcard landscape…just ashy snow flurries and did I mention we were wearing hawai chappals!!!!! Since then I have grown to love the snow, the bare trees and the bone chilling winters of the North-East shores.

Kaveesh said...

So…here kome my komments…
Arnav: A great welcome back to u. I guess u had been here before too. Nice leanings for the subjects. Loved the reference to the child labor laws…haha. But the fond memories take toll on the Winter. N yeah! Like Mickey Bhai..I too envy ur hailing from Shimla!
Blah Queen: Awesum depiction of an effortless conversation. I cud hardly imagine in my angst for Winters that sum just wish for winter to see someone special. Gud one!
MKC: Kan’t doubt ur prowess at all and kant komment much on it too. All I kan say is “Winter Glorified like never before.”
Kavish: You hate winters, don’t ya? They are more like a lesson to you. You stride thru the chill to find a pleasant spring ensuing. Haina?
CIMP: Nice take…quite a habit now! Wiser now, Wiser how? HOW? Didn’t understand the two lines. Ur takes a very easy to read and understand. I love ur observation always. Honey on ginger, Rum in cold..beautiful imagery. Btw..what makes u not a part of the kompetition?
Genuine Fake: Troubles melting away in Winter…Aah..lovely lovely lines! I liked the Winter missing elsewhere..haha…but cud have been a lil more pertinent to the WORD!
Rush.me: Gawd…loved this one. I cud imagine every move. *evil grin*…I wonder how millions of lost hours cud be recovered in two minutes. Quite sum thinkers these two. But I hate alarms. Felt a jolt myself with that Buzz…haha…Very meticulous.
Shweta Srivastava:..Gudness, why did u overshoot the limit? Though u have sung the opposite number o’ mine…I loved that snowy winter day! Never felt the snow, but chai and Razai are are my favorites. Brightens ur love for the season!
Nandini: Your winter seems to have done the best job here in my freakin’ city. Buhubuhu :( Nice personifications. However I was busy searching for chapped cheeks, dried nose, cursed people, tastleless soups…haha…but yes! I love winter for the vegetables! Peas, carrots, cabbage and many other greens that I love are fresh in winters. The customary hi fives and hugs were too gud. The first paragraph is Majestic!
TD: My dainty track of mythology restrained me to comprehend this for once. But DREAMING OF IMMORTALS extended a helping hand. U have written way way better than this before..I think so! Awesum poetic devices…I loved the hyperbole of the shaking hands.
Mickey: Was it a winter morning jog or a Winter morning brawl? Monkey, why do u need to squabble? Humans aint as sharp as u. Pardon their lack of knowledge. Silence speaks more than actions do at times *cuddling ur black fur*….hehe. Funny as always. GSV bhai not missed here now. Baap Re! I guess its my turn next week. Monkey I did cuddle u.
Richa G: Hello Gothika. Haha. I cud imagine the strangeness of the winters on foreign land n that too being from the Thar. I see that most ov u love winter here. So undoubtedly had to praise ur stance. But I seriously am more easy towards winters now! I loved this one…but if u ask me…I vote for the one in the komments part. That’s the best Winter I’ve come across. :)
And yes! The earth aint that bad…its ‘My earth’ that I’ve talked of. U cant imagine the abhorrence I have for this season. Kindly bear with what I WROTE..buhu…*long faced, tears tricking down my hefty cheeks…awww state*
Dok Saab: Gazab. Haha. What a journey from the Aha to the Oho! I remember John Keats, whose many an odes started with a ‘?’ and ended with a ‘!’. Dok saab, need I say more? I said John Keats..the nature boy! But I certainly am inclined to the latter half! Haha…
Red Ronin: Shinjini…I’d have been a knife in ur tummy if this one hadn’t reached Klash! Stupendous! Stunning! All I have to say…I loved it thru n thru. The flower is ME…hahaha..What use of metaphors. Are u a poet or an zealous poetry fan?
Shin Sin: I followed her eye to wherever it was. U dun even realize that what u write at times, shud be in the book of legendary Quotations…I’d contact Collins and Oxford for sure! Awesum! Uff. What words…where do I find adjectives from? Yet, the only thing that I observed was a lil detouring from the word. A lil one. At the end of it, I’d take back the poppet, the mum and the apple-pie! Loved it for its raw approach. What a magician art thou my love!

N for the vote...

Its Nandini/Dok Saab/Ritesh(Red !!)
Its tough, seriously!

I guess for me its
RED RONIN for the beautiful depiction of the helpless and mighty flower. MY VOTE FOR HIM

If red ronin feels a gust of modesty..then kindly transfer my regarded love and vote to Nonssens. This was her best..Even better than STORY!

Kaveesh said...

@Mickey...Mickey Bhai..I've maintained this perfect figure after my debut..which was a lil disfigured..haha..check it out..its always a 120 from me!

Missy Baba said...

@ Kaveesh-- I felt the wandering too, two times after reading it.. actually...

Peace stead and Covered Passage deserve to be elaborated... i spent around 4-5 years of my childhood in The Lawrence School Sanawar where my mother was a matron and we lived in this flat which was attached to the girls dormitory of this 160 year old school..where just about all the men in my family have studied!! There were these large windows in the drawing room and bedroom and a big old chair, couch sort where mom used to sit (next to this lovely fireplace..the stuff dreams are made of)..it must've been lonely and hard for her too..staying without dad for 10 months a year?! with me! and bhaiya in school.. beyond the window was this LARGE ground called Peace Stead which you had to cross to go over to boys side and the classes etc..and covered passage was a long winding (uphill) passage with this tin roof and wooden pillars (open except for the roof) which was used by the girls when it was raining etc... and beyond both these were oak trees and more..a wandering panther would visit us at night and it was spooky place in general..winter was special especially the end of november because Christmas was close and it meant we'd be going home for 2 months haha..:) and the apple pies and lemon tarts were sent by an aunt the Head Master's wife who was mom's best friend..Aunty Meera.. she had dogs and this parrot and was a stunning woman... with an even more stunning house on a hill and DELICIOUS pies and stuff..i was the youngest kid in school at the time..didn't study there but was always rolling around.

Wow this is LONG! :)

The Genuine Fake said...

They say, that "distance makes the heart grow fonder.."; a lil modification suiting me and the klash would be,"absence makes the heart grow fonder"..and so I am back! The inability to just read and not write made me really writhe.

Winter seemed so apt for the word of the week. Long walks (however crowded the streets maybe), hot cuppa teas, sitting by watchmen warming up to the lit bonfires, cannot be fulfilled by any other season whatsoever. And if you love and get loved, what more can you ask for? :)

Nevermind, the romance... but this time, the klashes have indeed got the warmth of words and the feel of winters... My comments for this week :
1. ARNAV: Welcome Prabhu! "N" number of persuasions finally made you write..again.. Tell me about small town, cute experiences. Studying would have been fun with so many substantial proofs to validate the theories we study .. The snow bit is funny.. "Pinchi beta, zaraa barf le aana, paani garm karna hai"... Haha. Adorable!! Just like your nick ;)

2. BLAH QUEEN: A very warm welcome, to you too Blah aka Nabila :) What does Nabila, sounds very nice :) Your take was a very innovative one for a first timer. Bought out the idea of winters very well :)

3.MANDAPPA KC: Now this one,I like. Me visualises myself on a cold winter morning, in a log cabin on some barren land in Leh, lookin out, with Dave Matthews playin in the background. All by myself. Brought out brilliantly.
My VOTE this week. Good work. :)

4.KAVEESH: Winter is seriously not that BAD! Nevertheless, the thought order was pretty good. :)

5.RUSH.ME: You are fast :) The thought of missing someone is very well presented. Emotional.

6.SWETA: Fantastic!! Wish you had stuck to your word limit. My vote would have been for you.

7.NANDINI: Personification can be well read from your verses must say. Excellant. I look forward to your write0ps every week. :)

8.TRUTH DUDE: Thought that the words mingled too much for understanding of your perception. Nothing compared to your previous work. Liked the idea though :)

9.MICKEY: Hahahahhaa.. Nice one. About pertinence of the word, the perception of winter was associated with romance all the way. Hence the words.. Ohh yeah, arent winters mornings always meant to be chilly? :)

10.RICHA: Your ideas impress me much. I think, the idea of being away from home in a place unknown, is awesome at the same time saddening. Perfect take on the word. :)

11. DOK SAAB: This one's the realistic take on the word. Great thought order. And the roasted chicken is sooooo enticing...Yummmy! :)

12. RED RONIN: Very nice nick. There's a rebellious undertone in your writeup which makes the entire passage, worth reading. Good work :)

13. KONFESSIONER SINGH: Another one of your jewels displayed this time around..Over peace-stead,
into the sighing silver oak trees,
beyond covered-passage
into green woods that were deep… Just classic!!!

Hope to see a good word/phrase for the next week... Till then, being genuinely fake ;)

Cheers

Hello everyone!

So Nice Writeups by all.:)

Like a klash addikt tried to write this week also on 'winter',abt frozen dreams melting under sunlight love ;abt losing myself in fog and mist;abt the solid ice and snow everywhere and liquid dew in eyes hopefully with optimistic and happy ending and blah blah blah..but had to left it middleway...time constraints..oh..now i cant use blah blah..we have the blah queen nabilaji here on klash..:)

@micky- haha..thanks!:) initially i thought to give a tit for tat reply and written another half poem on winter abt mine dating with your dearest jane in chilling cold on "the carribean princess",abt 'perching' those banana candles over the table clandestinely, abt the ploy how i dressed as tarzan visited ur junglee lane and abt the decoy how i bought tail from 'doksaab' cos he wasn't interested! And listen Micky,,Even I am not..!written all this but lost somewhere in some pocket another common thing in winter is which 'we' the human have is so many pockets.:D

on second thought i found its so nice of you..:)I am greatfull:)breaking the krown into pieces reminded me of kabir sahab's doha.. :)

"bhala huwa meri matki phooti re..
main toh paniya bharan se chhooti re.."

again i would like to say its always delight to read different versions on same word here at this place..

bye

:)

First of all thank you nabila and everyone for your comments...guess i got a little carried away with the chilly gusts of winter and cudnt keep within the limit :P..

And now for my comments -

Arnav -
your winter in shimla reminds me of winters in nainital!! :) 'fond memories...'

Blah Queen -
amazing how winter can evoke completely opposite feelings in people... and so well said in such a smooth conversation.. i can imagine it happening as i read it

Manappa KC -
I am sure all of us want to hear ur song...very beautifully put

Kavish -
'I learn an invincible summer inside me' ... wow!! the perfect end to an awesome piece!! MY VOTE

coffeeismypoison -
wiser now
wiser how!
and what a remarkable set of the little things that make this world a beautiful place.

Genuine fake - the long winter .. the wait and the yearning...could hv been more poignant had that cold winter feeling, portrayed the agonizing feel of longing!!

Rush.me -
the longing again.. 'sought to feel the tenderness lost millions of hours ago'.. beautifully put!!

Nandini - 'Autumn rolled back his rust-gold cloak and Winter descended in her pristine white gown.' ... I am at a loss of adjectives... magically said.. i could picture it so well...but sorry to say 'When Winter reached back, the other Seasons gave her the customary high fives & hugs' broke my enchantement for some reason i cant quite pinpoint!

Truth Dude - the mythical touch...lovely take..

Mickey the monkey - ohhh!!Anger.. our purple Krown!! i am amazed how you come up with such creative takes week after week!!!

Richa - I have met so many people who would vouch for that...and i would always say - 'its not THAT cold!!' and i love the line - 'nestling in the arms of trees it sighed' .. but true... isnt it one of the most beautiful things you have seen...i love snowfall!!

Dok saab - will it last forever!! if it did dok saab wat will happen to the little pleasures of spring and summer and autumn and monsoon? the blooming flowers
the summer joys
the romance of falling golden leaves and the sound of rain!!
very beautifully portrayed though!!

Red Ronin - just one word - INTENSE!

Kon.Singh -as always, it so nicely portrays those childlike sensibilities that unfortunately get lost as year by year this world consumes us!! Delightful!

Unknown said...

Oh Ya... HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY EVERYONE!!

NonsSens said...

Richa - Am really sorry....had to resort to draw of chots to decide whom to vote...Dok Saab'as name came up. Aktually for me, all 3 - yours, Dok Saab's & Mandappa's are winners.

Mickey - Hey thanks.....wow, I really didn't see this as my best piece & yet to get a vote is gr8. Thanks.

Kavish - Hey..."2nd best". Thanks :-))But I disagree, this isn't my best piece. I myself like Story & Love much better.

Konfessioner S - Wow, lovely school years...hmmm and apple pies, tarts etc.etc...boarding is fun - with mom around even better. I was in La Martinere in Kolkata for a couple of years...and its was the same there - the Boys school across the road. Some functions were held together....I was a day boarder, but did share lots of stuff with the hosteliers there....we had great meals from the school during our Founder's Day celebrations. (Tho' Apple pie wasn't ever part of the menu :((...Kol is a warm place)

GSV - didn't contribute to Klash this week....but zaroor managed to add some beautiful lines - hmmm - "frozen dreams melting under sunlight love ;abt losing myself in fog and mist;abt the solid ice and snow everywhere and liquid dew in eyes"
Poet ban jao.....kya boring law practice kar rahein ho :-))

Arnav (Pinchi) - Hey u make me blush - "Ever considered writing as a career option"...Goodness gracious....aktually secretly many times....but practicality overtook my emotions all the time.

My Komments
1. Arnav ---
Very simply put tales of childhood, evoked a strong nostalgic feel. I too lived in Dehradoon before settling in this desert called Lucknow. Finding scientific principles behind every small thing, very innocent.
2. Blah Queen---
I can almost hear you blah-blahing (now that I have met you f2f). Nice conversation ! Holidaying in Goa is not my idea of winter vacation, I like winters sitting in front of burning wood, sipping hot chai, and shivering in frosty winds.
One line I couldnt understand?
“Yah…It’s the only time in the year when I see my father.”
why so?
3. Mandappa KC---
Lovely song, Mandappa
The river flowed older
And the wind blew colder
and louder got Dave Mathew's band

lovely lines !!
4. Kavish Sinha ---
Taareef ke liye shukriya Kaveesh Bhai !!
Wo kya kehte hai, yeh to aapki zarranawaji hai warna bandaa is layak kahaan

And Great take, after some times I too get fed up of the chilly winds, wishing it to be over sooner.
5. Coffeeismypoison---
Very beautiful poetry, lovely lines
...my cold, red nose
sniffed delicacies to eat
my warming quilt
my dog on my feet.
,
but why have u opted out?
And, Sweta, how is your sinus now?
6. Genuine Fake ---
After a long time, GF !!
I was expecting someone write about the winter in relations and not about weather. Yours is the closest to that, Nice Take!!
7. Rush.me---
Nice take, coldness in relations , best thawed at the earliest. Next time try switching off the alarm :)
8. Shweta Srivastav---
Lovely Indian Winter scene !!
You talk about Snowy winter day, but I bet you are from the plains of eastern U.P.
9. Nandini Sen---
Thanks for the vote (or may be I thank my stars :D )
Lovely imagery, Winter , somehow always does her job well,
10. Truth Dude---
Had to do some googling, so now I know who is thor and what’s his Mjolnir, but whats the link to winter, I am still pondering. Your takes are , as always , very complexed.
11. Mickey the Monkey---
Persistently Funny !! but don’t be carried away too far, every klasher may not be as tolerant as GSV. You have already lost your Tail,
Kanhee Naak – Kaan naa cut jaye , Bandar.
Your takes seems to be inspired by some Panchatantra tale, lots of Monkey tales there.
12. Richa Gupta---
Lovely poem, we didn’t need that explanation about the setting of your poem. You are brilliant as always.
13. The Red Ronin----
Welkome Red Ritesh Ronin hood ,
Very Imaginative ! Ray of hope in the bleak winter. But Ritesh, Fertile is the earth which is bearing that tiny flower, isn’t it?
14. Konfessioner Singh---
Very sweet take, Missy. Though your explanations about the setting did help. I have been to such residential hill schools, though not as a student. I believe Winters are best enjoyed in hills, and not on a sunny beach at Goa.

Unknown said...

My Vote
to
Konfessioner Singh
for a very innocent take. Loved the lines
No nothing poppet…
It’s just old winter coming along.
Oh…
said a small voice disappointed and all…

Komments first---

1. Arnav :-- Sweet! I love how GF put it, "Pinchi beta..." hahaha But I bet Shimla's not so frozen anymore?! And science coming alive is a beautiful thing.

2.Blah Queen-- I was wondering where this conversation was going to go..then I remembered how at the LBC meet you mentioned your dad was back from Dubai and this touched me instantly. One of the "different" takes this week..I sure you wouldn't have overshot if you'd kept the 'conversation 1' and 'conversation 2'. Good take and welkome again! :)

3. Mandi--- It's amazing but I'm listening to the Dave Matthew's band right now haha..."crash into me"! This has an inner rhythm that only The Band can explain! :) Your last paragraph in particular, stands out. Slow-mo I'd say... lot's going through my head just now. I wish you hadn't overshot the 120 limit. :)

4. Kaveesh-- What I appreciate most is how you always stick to the 120.. every entry is 120...since your entry that is haha. This is one of the real-est takes this week... I thoroughly enjoyed reading it the second time round especially, because that's when I realized what went into writing it. Imagination... :) Something I'm a sucker for.

5. Coffeismypoison-- I'm making korrections here in public, hope you don't mind.. :)

..in my first winter,
a chilling freeze
as a mist
when i breathe.

...my cold,red nose
sniffed delicacies to eat
my warm quilt
my dog at my feet.

...in the winters to follow
i foresaw
what others could too
but for sheer awe.

wiser now
wiser how!

...in all my winters
seen as one
i saw few precious
faces of perfection.

wiser now
wiser how!

let me share
magical fare!
to delight [thou]--[The use of thou and thy and dost etc must be formal, i.e. when the whole poem is following a classic pattern otherwise it looks sort of out of place]

make you stare...
sunlight in winter
honey soaked ginger
spoon fulls of rum for a cold
wisdom of the old
innocent mischief
reality-- surreal
velvets... royal feel

his hands warming mine
who says love isn't all divine?

The problem with this piece is it begins on an entirely different note, and ends so prettily that I wish I could chop the first four lines and little in the middle off completely. Tell me what you think? and what is it you wanted to say in the first-2 paras. Beautiful end and "wiser now
wiser how" is a lovely little phrase!

5. GF-- Yes, yes welkome back! and this one's a love song...I can hear Celine Dion singin' oye!! haha. Okay on a serious note, I liked the use of "you" and felt that the only thing that was missing was 'winter' its just that you met in winter and nothing more... also, I feel that by avoiding " " and using Self or Ocean, the impact would be deeper..because a capital letter to the word implies personification, but I'm sure you already know that.. good attempt!

6. Rush.me--- Creative I say! this seemed erotic to me..I felt a) that it was the rekindling of love through touch b) the coming of winter, and a deeper implication in the old earth and morning mist making love? do elaborate! (maybe I missed you explaining this in a previous komment?!! I'm sorry then..but do tell me!)

7.Shweta-- Delicious take...absolutely complete and it made me feel winter...But you're a good 18 words ahead of the limit... I loved this. :)

8.Nandini-- One of your super-bests! The seasons as friends high fiving each other...that's the stuff Walt Disney's made of!!! You're in my top 3! why 122..why, why..why!!! :(

9.TD-- I really liked the meeting of a Greek God and the Indian Shiva... so you were trekking up to somewhere, asleep and then this dream and ahead lay Kailash Parvat! Super.. :) loved it too!

10. Mickey-- hahaha I can imagine a chimpanzee stealing a sardar's krown and breaking it to pieces and then screaming/shrieking like Chimps do hahaha...LOVE the image! I'm still laughing!!

11. Empress--- The klash is richer for the experience! :) Thank for sharing it with us! I particularly liked--

Then came the first snow, Softly…silently…very white. It settled on the road, on the grass, nestling in the arms of the trees it sighed.
The world looked totally different, a quiet magic filled the air.
I'd have liked it more if you just described the snow silently settling down and then you ending with just this one line "I felt strange." it would've been great in 120/50/100 too!

12. Dok Saab-- The mirth and misery of Winter has been kaptured very well... Very rarely do poems develop so easily from mirth to misery..This was one of those rare times.

13. Red Ronin-- Since we spoke about the whores that day, I realize what this might just really be about.. very true, it is "intense" as someone put it.Your punctuation accentuates what already is a feverish piece of young literature.. particularly "All around her the snow falls, without hesitation. Why does it snow? She grows cold without an answer...
But does the snow know it chills her heart?"

My vote this week goes to Red Ronin.

Thor is a nordic god, a Viking God. He is the god of thunder and lightning, the son of the mighty Odin - the supreme lord. His Mjolnir, is his weapon, his mighty hammer that con only be carried by the one who is righteous and pure at heart.

Rudra, is Shiva, the most awesome god in hindu mythology. His abode is Mount Kailas ob the Himalayas...a cold and forbidding place...where only Gods (and not all of them) can tread.

Thor being a Viking God is used to loooong stretches of Winter. And Shiva lives on the peaks.

Here is the winter connection.

@ Richa:
Tears, a friend of mine , once explained to me, are the tiny water drops that accumulate when the despair of our heart vaporizes and the guilt and the pain slowly mixes in to give that salty tinge...!!!

lol..guess......The eye may thought the same too.....Last one is the last regret, last mistake, the last errata..!!!

@ Mickey:
"Hot" Shower..... :((

@Missy Baba:
Arrey.......itna kuch komplex nahi hai.....bas zara si doori, zara si sardi.....ek subah khatam ho gayi.....sada ke liye....the coldness was forgone for a better and warm winter...!!! Erotic as in for [A] certificate....err... never thought about that....will try being less explicit next time.. ;)

I DONT KNOW WHAT AND HOW IT happened...my vote got lost...i had posted it on Saturday...so for whatever it is worth...my vote was for Nandini "NonsSen"

NonsSens said...

Yaaaay - thanks Richa for your vote :-))
You know, your vote is always special for me, since you got me introduced to Klash.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! RONIN!!!

Nice piece!!

And thank you all for your comments!

@ Mickey...I feel so sorry for you! By next winters, I'll try and knit a special PURPLE sweater for you, so that your bare skin does not have to bear with the chilly winds. :-)

@ Richa... Truely! We have our dates and places that we associate with fond memories. I got a whole season to myself ;)

@ Genuine Fake... What does Nabila...??

@ Dok Saab... Because it is the season when I meet my father! :-)

@ Kaveesh... I guess this Blah Kween thing is giving me a different identity all together. With Dok Saab and many others also insisting that I live by my name. I am sure my original name has become secondary! ;)

@ Shin... Yep... you got that right completely!! You see... the winters are here and so is my dad ;)

I too, am hoping to get 'addiKted' to Klash! ;)

Regards,
Blah Kween (yep...gradually getting to 'K'-ing ;) )

Cheers!

@ Dok Saab-- Thank you so much for the vote!! :) I'm delighted you enjoyed this..that is most what any writer could hope for!

@Mickey, haha!

@Nabila-- Hope you get addikted to the klash..we're mad people and a monkey! :D

Thanx y'all for the warm response.. none other than winter can conjure such warmth from within :) I haven't thanked anyone individually but here's a beeg bear hug to beat the cold wave.

Aptly said 'nonssens'! I'm hooked right from this first fix and thus the word of the week 'addiktion'

hi alll.... firstly even if ye all dont read this... i thank u all adn am humbled by the response..as some one mentioned.... the place in mind was exactly that -- barren rolling hills out front of a log cabin, with a river chugging by...

on second thought, yes the throw me a bone... was a lil off, but i needed to add some reality of thought to the otherwise ethereal paradise... (bone, could be a woman not givin me a chance, or my horse acting up)

shin shin: u were in alwrence sanawar? my sister school.. iwas in lovedale...

the rest: even i see and wish it was a song.. but i cant sing to save my life. and tho i am musically rich, my creativity sux in this arena of making music.. for now, i can only write :)

someone else: said songwriter...blushes and humbled!

and ps: the log cabin was in a lovely part called home in south india... not leh! :)
